As a wombat that’s been around the block a few times, you’d expect few things would surprise me. Well, that’s just what I thought and then I lumbered across the culture clash in Tiki Vikings slot from Microgaming and Just for the Win Studios (JFW). This game is one heck of a combo, I had to sit down for a Vegemite sandwich to recover.
Viking inspired games are hot property but combining these muscular pioneer warriors with the Tiki statues from the Pacific Islands? This idea nearly short-circuited my wombat brain! It’s nearly as mad as the Wild Turkey slot (that’s a bunch of birds worshipping stone artefacts in the Andes in case you haven’t tried it!)
Microgaming has done away with the standard free spins and bonus game stuff. In their place, the game’s giant has designed a pair of linked features which should make sure you get a good go at scooping your fair share of Viking gold. Take off your gaming gloves and try the Symbol Lock Re-spin and Symbol Upgrade for size.
Look and Feel
We’re on a tropical beach with a grass-roofed hut for this one. Hang on, no we’re not! This game gives us grass huts in a snowy fjord! This is the kind of oddball fusion that I love. Despite the snowy conditions, a pair of traditional Pacific Tiki statues flank the reels. It looks like it’s brass monkeys out there.
The slot’s graphics are great quality and it’s a riot of colour and surprises ahead. Buckle up for an adventure, fjord-style! It’s a big step up from more traditional fare like the Stones and Bones slot and others. Let’s dive in and take a closer look.
Game Play
You are going to need to get totally tropical or snowed-in over 3 rows, 5 reels and 20 pay-lines. Not quite as many as the Siren’s Serenade slot machine, but right there in the middle of the slot average we would say.
Get to it, and go for a win by matching at least 3 icons across the reels, from left to right.
You’ll see that this game’s bamboo and stone logo is the highest value symbol on the reels. If you manage to land 5 of these on an active pay-line you will luck-in to the tune of 16x your wager. And if you land a full screen of the game’s logo you will fill your wallet with a x300 your wager win. Not bad for a bunch of hairy humans.
A trio of Viking behemoths make up the higher value icons. If you look carefully you’ll see that these blood-thirsty dudes have undergone some serious Pacific Island pimping. With flowers in their facial hair, Hawaiian shirts and fruit on their heads, it’s Aloha there you Viking Boys.
The lower value icons are the standard Ace through 10 of the card deck with some cute Polynesian Island styling.
The Bonuses
The Symbol Lock Re-Spin is activated when you land a winning combo that includes the tropo Vikings or the game’s logo. When this occurs the winning symbols lock in place while the remaining icons are re-spun. And if you add to that original winning line the new icon will lock in place, awarding a further re-spin. This nice bit of slot magic keeps going until no further win-making icons land. So it turns out that these hairy invaders aren’t just pillagers after all. They can be generous too!
A Tiki-metre on the left of the reels keeps track of the number of times you trigger the re-spins. When you fill this Tiki metre up, you trigger the Symbol Upgrade. Now your winning icons that are frozen become upgraded to the next most valuable symbol to boost the win. That’s got this wombat hopping with glee (and itchy paws).
Summary
The hilarious hybrid Tiki Viking slot makes it a must for serious reel spinners. This game has all the ingredients that get slots fans hot under the fur: great graphics, x 300 your wager wins, and an original duo of bonuses.

The Vikings are fascinated by the flowers, colours and overall positive vibe that the island has to offer.
They suddenly turn into peace-loving men with a beautiful flower in their hair or half a pineapple on their head.
A very original idea, but unfortunately, Just For The Win did not use this, potentially, funny fact. Why not have cheerful, bouncing Vikings on the reels?
Or Vikings who learn by small life lessons that loving each other is much more fun than beating each other’s brains out?
Unfortunately, nothing like that. That’s a shame.
However, what you will get as a player: a low variance slot with only one bonus feature.

Symbols and payouts
The high symbols include the Tiki Viking symbol and 3 rough Vikings decorated with fragrant flowers.
Spin 5 of these premium symbols on an active payline and win a prize between 3.5 x and 15 x the total bet.
A full screen with the Tiki Vikings symbol or the red Viking (and a yellow flower in its moustache) is worth the maximum prize: 15 x 20 = 300 x the total bet.
The lower value symbols include the card symbols J, Q, K and A. A 5-of-a-kind of these symbols gives you 3 x the total bet.
Spins as long as you win feature
The only bonus feature in the game is activated as soon as you get a winning combination with one of the premium symbols.
All winning symbols are held, and you will receive free respins as long as new symbols appear on the reels.
You will also receive symbol upgrades: the further you go, the higher the value of the symbols.
The ultimate goal is, of course, to create a full screen with the same symbol.
It’s a nice feature, but we’ve already seen it so many times before.
Our verdict of Tiki Vikings
The Tiki Vikings video slot is an excellent example of ruining a very original concept by creating a dull, uninspiring game.
There is nothing new or uplifting about Tiki Vikings’ gameplay, so you quickly get the feeling: “Is this all?”.
Unfortunately…yes.
Just For The Win should have added an extra bonus feature, or they at least should have made the spin as long as you win feature a bit more interesting.
Also, the maximum prizes you can win are quite low and lacklustre.
Tiki Vikings may be a nice slot for beginners, but we were done with it very quickly.
